About cholera
Cholera is an acute diarrhea infection caused by consumption of food or water contaminated with cholera vibrio bacteria, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
Cholera can cause severe acute water diarrhea. It takes 12 hours five days for someone to show symptoms after swallowing food or contaminated water.
Most people who are infected with Vibrio Cholera do not develop any symptoms, even though bacteria are present in their feces for 1-10 days after infection and are spilled back into the environment, potentially infecting others, WHO said.
Cholera is an easily treated disease. The majority of people can be treated successfully through the provision of fast oral rehydration solutions.
Multifaset approach is the key to controlling cholera, and reducing death. The combination of supervision, water, sanitation and cleanliness, social mobilization, maintenance and oral cholera vaccines are used.
