Ruchira Kamboj, India's first woman UN envoy, as she takes charge: 'To the girls out there...'

Senior Diplomat Ruchira Kamboj who is responsible as India’s new permanent representative for the United Nations on Tuesday gave credentials to the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres. In a tweet, he said it was a privilege to become the first Indian woman to be given the honor to hold this position. He also slipped in notes for girls: “For girls out there, we can all make it!”

A 1987 Indian Foreign Service Officer (IFS), Kamboj has served as an Indian envoy for Bhutan. He replaced T Tirumuhi as the Indian ambassador to the United Nations. She is also the first female messenger in the country who served in the headquarters of the world agency in New York.

When he took over as an Indian messenger to the United Nations, congratulations poured. The Ambassador of the Kamboj Tirtumah’s predecessor said, “Congratulations and all the good hopes for your success Ruchira! @Indiaunnewyork.”

Kamboj was the female-Indian topper from the 1987 civil service batch and the peak of the overseas service batch of that year.

He began his diplomatic journey in Paris where he was placed in the Indian embassy to France from 1989-1991. Kamboj, however, then returned to Delhi where he worked as a secretary at the West Europe Division from the Ministry of External from 1991-96.

From 1996-1999, he served in Mauritius as the first secretary (economy and commercial) and the head of the Chancellor at the Indian High Commission in Port Louis.

Kamboj served as a high commissioner of India to South Africa, with accreditation together with the Kingdom of Lesotho from July 2017 to March 2019.

He took over the accusation as an Indian envoy for Bhutan on May 17, 2019.
